Rieder studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited his work at the Salon nearly every year from 1883 until 1939. Around 1894 his style changed. He became interested and famous for his light effects. Most of his paintings are peaceful indoor scenes with the different lighting that was used during his lifetime, ranging from oil to electrical.
